Charles started playing the organ from the age of 15. At Cardiff University he received his first formal lessons with Robert Joyce and Michael Smith and participated in Master classes given by Jennifer Bate and Gillian Weir. He accompanied the university choirs on a number of occasions and gave a Premier performance at the Cardiff Festival (1974) which had national write ups.

After university Charles continued his organ studies with Anne Marsden Thomas and his piano studies with Guy Johnson at the Royal Academy of Music.

In 1980 and 84 Charles won scholarships (representing Great Britain) to study in Master classes given by Prof. Flor Peeters at Mechelein Cathedral, Belgium, this was to help kick start 30 years of international playing. In 1983 came the first trip to America for 5 recitals including Seattle Cathedral. Regular visits then started to America, Charles’s last recitals there were at Washington National Cathedral and the First Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Besides giving recitals in British Churches and Cathedrals Charles has also played regularly in Europe, notably Poland, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy and Sweden. He has also given master classes in Sweden and Poland. Charles is a regular recitalist in New Zealand and Australia, last year Tasmania was added to the list.

In 1994 Charles opened his own Music Academy, which he ran successfully for 10 years after which he returned to class music teaching, which he was missing.

Charles came to Dover in 2008 to become Director of Music of Dover Grammar School for Boys. He has since retired from this position and now frequently plays as a freelance organist in the many churches in this area.

Eight years ago Charles founded Dover Community Youth Choir. This choir has sang services in many cathedrals and prestigious churches around Great Britain. Including various times at St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. This year the choir made their (by request) fourth return visit to York Minster, St Alban’s Abbey and Croydon Minster.

Charles was appointed Musical Director of the Deal & Walmer Handelian Choral Society in February 2019.
